Nerd!

  • Oct. 22nd, 2008 at 1:23 PM

I just saw a comic strip about rolling a die and always getting a 20.  And I looked at the comic and at the die in question and the thought that sprang to mind was, "Well, you're not going to roll a 20 on that!  That's a d8."

I have arrived.  I am Nerd.

Meme stolen from Ms Frisby

  • Grab the nearest book.
  • Open the book to page 56.
  • Find the fifth sentence.
  • Post the text of the next seven sentences in your journal along with these instructions.
  • Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.
The Spelling Bee buzzed dangerously in and out of range of the Humbug's wildly swinging cane as they menaced and threatened each other, and the crowd stepped back out of danger.

"There must be some other way to--" began Milo.  And then he yelled, "WATCH OUT," but it was too late.

There was a tremendous crash as the Humbug in his great fury tripped into one of the stalls, knocking it into another, then another, then another, then another, until every stall in the market place had been upset and the words lay scrambled in great confusion all over the square.

The bee, who had tangled himself in some bunting, toppled to the ground, knocking Milo over on top of him, and lay there shouting, "Help!  Help!  There's a little boy on me"  The bug sprawled untidily on a mound of squashed letters and Tock, his alarm ringing persistently, was buried under a bile of words.

Back again!

  • Oct. 8th, 2008 at 9:02 PM

I have return-ned!

The trip was wonderful.  The wedding was beautiful.  We had a really great time.  And I get a little depressed about being back here when there was so nice.

I'm trying to write it up for my mom and I keep getting mopey about not being there.

Massive backwards update.

  • Sep. 16th, 2008 at 11:42 AM

So Nick gave me a nudge, which I guess is a subtle suggestion that I should write an update to my LJ. :) Actually, not so subtle, since the email I got from the LJ folks said that it's been x-number of weeks since you've updated, so why don't you go do that!  So.  Here I am.

For a while, LJ was totally unaccessible for me from work.  I still can't get to my friends page, but now I can see my front page, which means that I should, with any luck, be able to post to it.  We'll see how this goes.

I'm trying to think of what's happened since the last time I was here regularly.  There's a lot.  Let's work backwards and get totally confused!

Two weeks from today, Justin and I are going to Costa Rica for a wedding.  I'm very excited.  I love to travel and haven't been out of the country in five years.  Justin, on the other hand, is anxious about our safety.  He's never been to a 3rd-world country before.  I'm hoping that we'll have a really fun time, but I have to figure out how to make him feel more comfortable.

Sometime in the next couple of weeks, my office is playing desk shuffle.  Knowing how things go, this will probably happen while I'm gone.  But we're moving to a completely different part of the building.  I like moves like this, mostly because I don't have a lot of stuff and I enjoy sorting it out into new places.  Plus, where we're moving is nicer than where we're sitting right now.  But it's going to cause a lot of disruptions and it could get kind of interesting around here.  As if it wasn't already interesting enough.

Also work related, I'm in the process of getting hired on directly.  There's a process involved and it's tentative all the way through, so I'm not talking about it much, but hopefully it's happening and once it's all done, I'll be able to talk about it more.

Last Sunday (Sept. 7th), my sister gave birth to her daughter, Chloe.  Everything went wonderfully well (there was a short scare because she has so much fluid in her lungs, but once they got it all out, she was fine) and mama and baby are doing great!  My parents went to see them last weekend.  If Justin and I can find the funding, we're going to go up north for Thanksgiving.  I'm at the point of tears when I think that we might not have the money to go.  But we're still trying to figure out how to do it.  And then to also get up to Justin's folk's for Christmas.

At the beginning of August, Justin and I moved to a townhouse in a small town in South Carolina.  I'm still about as close to work as I was before, but Justin's commute is considerably shorter.  The house is still a mess and still stressing me out because of that.  The closet space is considerably diminished.  But it's getting better and I'm getting less stressed.  We love the house.  It's three bedrooms, so Justin and I both get our own offices, once we dig ourselves out of boxes.  So many of my office things and books have been in boxes since September of last year, so it's taking me a while.  This house is bigger in most ways, other than closets and storage, and absolutely beautiful.  Two stories, so it feels much more like a house.  The community pool is just down the block, so Justin and I have been trying to get there every day.  We LOVE our new home.  I just wish it was all unpacked and organized.

In the middle of July, in preparation for the move, we bought me a new car.  I'm driving a beautiful new Nissan Versa now, blue, with a sunroof.  That sunroof was a beast to get in, too, because they actually installed it after we bought the car.  I love it!  I feel a little guilty about it because Justin's car is falling apart and we really need to get some work done on it, and we have other expenses like plane tickets that we're struggling with paying now that we have this car payment.  But I'm also very much enjoying my car.  And I don't know how we would have managed with only one car after we moved.

Around the same time that we bought the car, Justin's family came down to visit.  They were here for about three weeks, one week with only his grandma and his sister, but the rest of the time it was all four of them.  They helped us move as much as they could, which was very nice.

We saw my folks a couple of weeks after the move.  They were in northeast Georgia so we drove up there to see them.

And that's as far back as I can remember right now.  That should cover all the big things, though.  It's been a crazy couple of months.  I'm not really sure where September has gone to.  And I'm pretty sure August was only a week long and everybody's just pretending that it was any longer than that.

I'll try to get on here more frequently.  Now that things are reaching a sort of uneasy calm, I'm trying to do better about keeping in touch with people (calling home, stuff like that).  If you don't see me here, you can always check at my other website (Inking My Thinking).  My mom reads that one every day so I'm trying to at least update over there so she knows I'm okay.

Also, I'm trying to understand Twitter, so if you're over there, please let me know.  I can't get to it from work either, so I'm only on in the evenings and occasionally weekends.  Look for KyleneS over there.

Hopefully you're all doing really great!  I can't check my friends page, like I said, so I really don't know what's happening with people today.  But I hope you're all well and I'll check in with ya'll again soon!
